Anonymous reporting that still leaves a way to answer the person who reported
What I was handed
Konfidal is a platform for reporting wrongdoing at work, made for the German whistleblower law. Its CTO had built the app himself and was getting it ready to launch. He sent me sketches of what he had in mind.
What I was brought in for
To build a component library for the app, recreate every screen with it and redesign them. The CTO would apply the new design to the app himself before the launch.
An anonymous report has to stay anonymous and still let the company answer: the reporter leaves with a token instead of a name, and comes back with it to a private conversation.
The test task was the card that shows a report to the case handler, and I made it simpler. Then I built the component library, recreated the app in it screen by screen and redesigned it. The CTO set the direction and took my proposals, such as the channel card that opens on a click. Without being asked, I also drew the product’s structure as a scheme.
The app launched in June 2022 with the redesign. When the company was renamed Konfidal that July, I designed its new logo.
A report is anonymous unless the reporter decides otherwise.
Employees report through their company’s portal in four steps: what happens to a report, the report itself, files, and a way back in. Stay anonymous is switched on from the start, and the fields for a name and contact details appear only when the reporter turns it off.
The reporter leaves with a token instead of a name.
The last step creates the report and gives the reporter a token. The report is submitted only when the reporter pastes the token back, so they have saved it before they leave. With the token they sign in again to follow the report and talk with the case handler, who never sees their name.
Every new report starts a deadline for the company.
The people the company chose see the reports by channel, each with its deadline. The law gives seven days to confirm that a report arrived, so a new report opens with Confirm receipt beside the reporter’s first message. The answer goes into the same chat.
Each company decides who reads which reports.
On the first visit a person joins their company with its token or creates a new one. The company then sets up its channels, such as finance or HR, and adds users to each. A user’s role in the channel decides what they can do there.
